In 2016, he was the first diplomate to complete a fellowship in Chiropractic Craniocervical Junction Procedures earning his FCCJP. During his professional training at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Dr. Scholten was inducted into the exclusive Vogt Society as recognition for exemplary personal leadership, received a Certificate of Merit for his role as an Anatomy Teaching Assistant, earned a membership in Pi Tau Delta (an International Chiropractic Honour Society as a recognition of superior academic achievement), and was awarded with a Certificate of Recognition for Extraordinary Personal Action from the American Red Cross. During his time at the University of Calgary, he was granted a Jimmy Condon Athletic Scholarship to reward his athletic and academic excellence.
As an undergraduate student in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary in the mid-1990’s, Jeff was exposed to NUCCA when his sister, Christin, experienced tremendous health benefits from care with Dr. Al Berti. While working with his sister as a kinesiologist-in-training during his schooling, Jeff observed her almost instantaneous structural improvements. The exceptional results experienced by his sister piqued Dr. Scholten’s interest in the NUCCA procedures, and he began to investigate this little-known chiropractic procedure with a local NUCCA clinician, Dr. Gary Thomson. The results he observed in Dr. Thomson’s practice created a deep appreciation for the role that appropriate structural balance in the upper neck plays in human health and disease. In short order, he was inspired to shift his academic focus and make chiropractic his career path.
Clinical interest: TMJ Treatment in Calgary
As an active clinician, Dr. Scholten focuses on the relationship between malocclusion (teeth not fitting together properly, often called “TMJ”) and postural issues. While The Vital Posture™ Clinic has an overall focus on postural difficulties, TMJD pain is often multifactorial. Therefore, multidisciplinary treatment is (in most cases) chosen to address the string of physical problems. Through his NUCCA knowledge, expertise, and intervention, Dr. Jeff Scholten can help relieve TMJ pain.
Officially indicated as TMJD (TemporoMandibular Joint Disorder) or TMJ syndrome, the issue can activate symptoms ranging from:
- Tension Headaches
- Facial Pain
- Jaw Pain
- Neck Pain
- Shoulder Pain
- Postural Imbalances
- Persistent back pain issues.
Dr. Scholten works in cooperation with a range of medical professionals such as dentists, massage therapists, medical doctors, naturopathic doctors, optometrists, pedorthists, personal trainers, and other professionals who are aligned with the NUCCA philosophy and treatment options.
Dr. Scholten is a published clinical researcher, the clinic director and a clinician at the Vital PostureTM Clinic in Calgary, and a professor at Life Chiropractic College West teaching diagnosis and management of spinal disorders.
As a volunteer, he serves as the President of NUCCA, is Past-President, credentialing committee chair, and a Board Member on the ICA’s Upper Cervical Council, and is a Board Member of the Upper Cervical Research Foundation. Dr. Scholten is also past-President of Upper Cervical Health Centers Inc. (UCHC), past NUCCA Vice-President, past NUCCA Treasurer, past Chair of NUCCA’s fund-raising committee, past Chair of NUCCA’s corporate liaison committee, and he served the UCRF on a special committee as liaison to the Canadian Institute of Natural and Integrative Medicine for a number of years.
A regular presenter at conferences, in 2019/2020 Dr. Scholten will have presented more than 100 hours in or around Canada, the United States, Italy, and Israel. He teaches regularly on Anatomy, Diagnosis, Research, Patient Management, Pain Management, and Practice Principles. The lectures Dr. Scholten delivers to his fellow chiropractors, the general public, dentists, physicians, and other professionals are admired for his passion, clarity, and engagement.
- The integration between dental and chiropractic professions on the diagnosis and management of TMD
- Practice-Based Research, with the goal of predicting and optimizing patients’ response to care
- Helping people understand health and disease so they can proactively plan to age gracefully
- Assisting those suffering from the detrimental health effects of mild/moderate traumatic neck injuries
- Supporting his fellow clinicians to develop and maintain outstanding office and patient procedures
The idea of being able to positively impact the quality of a person’s life, and the amazing health benefits experienced by his family through NUCCA care, originally led Dr. Scholten to pursue a career in chiropractic. The tremendous patient results seen within his own practice along with his vision of seeing the specific assessment for subluxation of the upper cervical spine as a first step in health care, has inspired Dr. Scholten to devote significant time and attention to the advancement of this branch of chiropractic.
