A headache is often a pain in the neck! This is true in more ways than one. Millions of people suffer from headaches, and more than half of these cases are accompanied by neck pain. Nerve irritation and pressure on the blood vessels in the neck caused by vertebral misalignments may contribute to various types of headaches as well as being a source of pain themselves.

Headaches account for one of the most frequent reasons for missing school or work. The most common type of headache is a tension headache. It is estimated that 80-90% of the population will experience a tension headache at least once during their lifetime. Tension headaches are often caused by an imbalance in muscle tension in the head and neck which gives rise to a dull throb or pressure-like sensation around the head. This type of headache can be perpetuated by poor posture, stress, and improper sleeping positions.

An underlying vertebral misalignment in the neck is often overlooked in the treatment of headaches. If left uncorrected, this can lead to prolonged muscle imbalance and neurological dysfunction and an increased recurrence of headaches. Don’t let your head pain steal another day from you! Get checked by your NUCCA Doctor to see if a misalignment in your neck may be at the root of your pain.

Migraines

122531591Migraines are a particularly debilitating type of headache that can leave you disabled for hours to days. If you or someone you know has ever suffered a migraine, you know how detrimental it can be, both physically and emotionally.

There are several contributing factors that may predispose you to having migraine headaches. New evidence is examining how a misalignment in the upper neck may alter fluid and nerve flow to and from the brain. Vertebral misalignments can irritate nerves and restrict fluid flow out of the head. Imagine stepping on a hose and then turning the water on; this leads to an increase in pressure in the hose. Similarly, when fluid is not draining from the head properly, there will be a buildup of pressure in the head which can lead to a variety of problems, including migraines.

The NUCCA adjustment is a specific and gentle approach to correcting misalignments in the upper neck, allowing for proper nerve function and fluid flow to be restored.
